Hola

Heyo! I’m Mike Villa. I’m 20 years old and a junior at Biola University where I’m majoring in photojournalism. The past two years I’ve studied at Biola’s campus in Southern California, but this fall I’ll be studying abroad in London.  When I’m not at school I live at home in Chandler, Arizona but I was born in Tampa, Florida. I love taking pictures, making videos, and playing music – really just telling God’s stories about people through media.

Ways into my heart include good spaghetti, snowboarding, Vans (the shoes), and Sriracha chili sauce.

  2. Hey Mike,
Just thought I would give you a shout. I read some of your earlier “ramblings” about church…what, who, why, etc. Great that you are evaluating authenticity, real worship, community, etc., in your 20’s instead of your late 40’s…. Problem is, when I feel like dumping some of the stuff that feels like “doing” because it is what is expected, always done, or what other churches are doing; in my position it creates as much confusion as it does help. I guess there are a lot of us trapped in the modern church growth/business models of Kingdom work and it is hard to know how/what to change for some weird fear of dropping something that really matters to people with whom I am in community – and who I said I would serve. If you have time ro red anything besides school stuff, JESUS LOVE YOU THIS I KNOW by Gross and Harper has my attention (add in THEY LIKE JESUS BUT NOT THE CHURCH, DELIBERATE SIMPLICITY, AND NO PERFECT PEOPLE ALLOWED and you can sense my trajectory of thoughts). If I could, I would take a bunch of people and just start from scratch…maybe that’s what I am doing in someways afterall. Looks like you are digging London. Only spent two nights there myself.

we launched a third gathering in the gym a few weeks ago. my favorite service of the week so far. tonight i speak 15 and dialogue and worship about it the rest of the time before we come in repentance to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. great way to end the day. grace and peace, dave

Thanks Dave. I’m glad you actually took the time to stop by. I totally get what you’re saying and I’m not trying to say that my standards are the end all be all for churches. I just thought I’d summarize my experience with them and show a college-aged Christian’s point of view on a few issues that I see. However I definitely am aware of the realistic compromises that must be made sometimes, as well as the need to cater to more than one single person’s desires (aka mine). Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you’re doing well. See you in December!
